Accident & Emergency

Our Emergency Department operates 24 hours per day.

As the Hospital does not have salaried medical staff, you will be assessed by nursing staff who will  contact the on-call doctor from your own medical clinic (if you don't have a relationship with a medical clinic in Benalla, a rostered doctor will be called).

Your doctor will bill you directly for his/her attendance.  There is no charge from the Hospital.

Allied & Community Health Services

The following services are provided through our Delatite Community Health Service located in the Benalla Community Care building alongside the Hospital in Coster Street.

More Details...

Breast Feeding Support Service

We have a number of trained Lactation Consultants on our midwifery staff who provide expert support and care for mothers experiencing difficulties with breast feeding.  A special clinic operates each Friday where mothers may present for support, education and assistance.

Day Activity Centre

Located in the A.L. Berry Day Care Centre, this program continues to provide great support for local families each week day.

Clients enjoy a range of activities, including numerous group games and programs, and regular outings in the Hospital bus.  While providing an interesting day for the client, this service also provides a regular break for carers, who may be confident their loved one is enjoying the opportunity to interact with others.

Discharge Planning

Our Discharge Planner works closely with health care providers, patients and their family/carers to ensure the transition back into the community is smooth and successful.  Early identification of needs following hospitalisation allows for prompt arrangement of services and support so that patients need not experience unnecessary delays in going home.

Graduate Nurse Program

The Hospital offers 4 Graduate Nurse Year positions each year.  A comprehensive program includes 7 weeks supernumerary experience and rotations to surgical, medical and aged care.  14 study days are paced to support the transition from student to practitioner.

A 2 weeks supernumerary placement in an area of interest (eg Theatre, Midwifery, Accident & Emergency, Community Nursing) provides opportunities to consider future directions.  Annual leave is taken in 2 blocks throughout the program to give Graduates a well earned break

Home Nursing Service

The Home Nursing Service is comprised of the District Nursing Service, Palliative Care and Hospital In The Home:

The District Nursing Service provides registered nurses who travel within the community, supporting people in their homes with the provision of a range of services such as wound and medication management.  Clients may be referred by their doctor, the Hospital, their carer or may self-refer.

Hospital In The Home provides a specific range of acute treatments allowing people with certain conditions the option of being treated at home, rather than having to be in hospital.

The Palliative Care Service, provides specialist care for people with a life threatening illness.

The Team provides a specialised service to members of the community, supporting and caring for them in their time of need.  The Service helps maintain people in their homes if this is their wish, and may assist if hospitalisation is required.  Ongoing support is provided to families to assist in the grieving process.

Maternity Services

Located adjacent to the Surgical Ward, the Midwifery Ward boasts 3 fully contained birthing suites where mothers are admitted and usually remain for the duration of their stay.

Antenatal classes and a booking-in program are offered to expectant women and their partners to assist in the preparation for delivery.

General practitioner obstetricians work closely with our midwives, supported by a specialist obstetrician.

Visiting hours are relaxed, however visitors are requested to observe the 1.00 - 3.00pm rest period.

Medical Ward

In response to constant demand, the Medical Ward has been increased to 31 beds.  This is a very busy Ward, providing acute treatment and rehablitation services.

Patients who have had joint replacement surgery in other hospitals are able to transfer back early for intensive rehabilitation.

Nursing Home

Our Morrie Evans Wing Nursing Home is a 30 bed Unit, located on Hospital grounds (but separate from the Hospital and with its own entrance).

It offers high level aged care residential services, including a respite bed for periods of up to 9 weeks.  Demand for places is high, with a waiting list that is constantly reviewed.

The staff, supported by an activities co-ordinator, ensure that the resident's lives are enriched and their days occupied.  A large touch screen computer has been installed to provide Internet and email access to the residents.  "Burnely" the pet cat complements the home-like atmosphere.

The 'Friends of Morrie' (a group comprised of resident and families) advocate for the residents and provide little extras for the residents, such as Happy Hour each month.  New members are always welcome.

Radiology

A comprehensive range of radiological examinations are available.  The Hospital's Radiology Department offers x-rays, including dental films, for inpatients and outpatients.

A private operator, Broken River Imaging is conveniently located next to our Radiology Department, offering colour ultra-sounds and the latest in CAT scan technology.  This is a private service not operated by the Hospital and patients will be billed for procedures by Broken River Imaging.

There is a Radiologist at the Hospital Monday to Friday for prompt reporting of x-rays, and an emergency out of hours system is available.

Surgical Services

Our 12 bed Surgical Unit has been recently renovated to provide 1 and 2 bed rooms, each with its own ensuite facility and verandah access.

We also have an additional 10 bed Day Procedure Unit, located in the John Lindell Wing.  This has a separate and discrete entry and access from the main hospital and provides a spacious and comfortable waiting area for accompanying partners.

Theatre

Our modern operating room supports a busy operating schedule, with 1,521 operations performed in 2006/2007.

General practitioner anaesthetists support a comprehensive range of services provided by visiting surgeons, including general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology, ENT, and oral & maxillofacial surgery.  Public and private colonoscopy and gastroscopy lists are also provided.

Waiting lists are minimal, providing for early intervention.
